The rule has been introduced under the Himachal Pradesh Town and Country Planning (17th Amendment) Rules, 2026, marking a significant step toward strengthening EV infrastructure.

The amendment requires developers and builders to include EV charging facilities while designing new residential and commercial projects. This policy is expected to make EV ownership more convenient for residents and businesses, while also encouraging sustainable urban development.

India’s electric vehicle market has been expanding rapidly in recent years. Electric two- wheelers currently dominate the market in terms of volume, followed by three-wheelers, while electric passenger vehicle sales have also gained momentum, crossing the one-lakh annual sales mark.

Major automobile companies such as Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, MG Motor and Hyundai Motor Company are actively expanding their EV portfolios. At the same time, two-wheeler brands like TVS Motor Company, Ather Energy and Bajaj Auto are accelerating innovation, indicating that the demand for EV infrastructure will continue to rise.
