Punjab Unveils Massive Road Network Plan Across 1,300 Acres to Transform Mohali and New Chandigarh

Punjab has taken a major step toward reshaping the urban future of Mohali and New Chandigarh by initiating a large-scale road infrastructure project spanning nearly 1,300 acres. The Housing and Urban Development Department has issued a formal notification to conduct a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for constructing HR, VR, horizontal and approach roads under the region’s master plan. The move signals a strong push toward planned urban growth and improved connectivity.

The project will be executed by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), which has been entrusted with completing the development within a fixed timeline. To enable the new road network, land will be acquired from more than 50 villages across Mohali and New Chandigarh. Once completed, the roads are expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and strengthen connectivity between emerging residential and commercial hubs.

A key component of the project is the acquisition of 156.61 acres for the development of the Landran–Banur road as a horizontal corridor. This road has long posed challenges due to its narrow width and poor condition. The new corridor is expected to provide smoother travel, reduce congestion and greatly benefit residents of New Sunny Enclave and nearby sectors.

Another major proposal includes a new horizontal road connecting Dara Studio to Kharar via Badmajra, requiring around 108.57 acres of land. This corridor will directly benefit sectors 120, 121, 122, 123, 124 and 125 by reducing travel time, lowering traffic pressure and accelerating overall development in the region.

Before final acquisition, authorities will evaluate whether the project truly serves a public purpose and assess its social impact, including potential displacement of families. Importantly, areas where developers have already received CLU approvals and sellability benefits under the 06.02.2015 policy will remain outside the acquisition process, ensuring that approved and developed projects are not affected.
