Chandigarh is set to strengthen its urban infrastructure with the addition of six new community centres in the coming year. The Municipal Corporation’s engineering department has initiated the preparation of financial estimates, marking a significant step toward execution of these long-awaited civic projects.

The proposed community centres will be developed in Sector 24, Sector 29, Sector 51, Sector 63, Bapudham Colony in Sector 26, and Manimajra. These facilities aim to address the growing demand for modern community spaces across the city, supporting social, cultural, and public events at the sector level.

According to MC officials, the corporation’s improving financial position has played a key role in fast-tracking these projects. With expectations of higher allocations in the revised estimates and increased grants in the 2026–27 financial year, Chandigarh is poised to be in a strong position to undertake large- scale developmental works.

The urban planning department has already released architectural plans for all six centres, designed to meet contemporary standards and functional requirements. The structural designs will be prepared by the MC’s engineering wing, after which the projects will move directly into the tendering phase, as approvals from the general house are already in place.

Of the six centres, four will be constructed at newly earmarked locations, while two—Sector 29 and Manimajra—will be rebuilt after demolishing outdated structures. Notably, the Sector 51 community centre will be the largest among them, with a capacity of approximately 700 to 800 people, positioning it as a major hub for community activities in the city.
