PGIMER–Sarangpur Flyover Gets Final Clearance: Construction to Begin Soon, Major Relief for Chandigarh Traffic
Chandigarh’s long-awaited PGIMER–Sarangpur Flyover has received final clearance from the urban planning department, marking a major breakthrough for the city’s infrastructure. With approvals now in place, authorities will move forward with cost estimation and the tendering process. Construction is expected to begin between April and May this year, bringing hope for faster and smoother travel across one of Chandigarh’s busiest corridors.
The flyover will start near the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and extend to Sarangpur, passing through Khudda Jassu and Khudda Lahora villages. This stretch currently faces severe traffic congestion due to heavy movement of hospital visitors, students, and daily commuters. Once completed, the flyover will significantly reduce bottlenecks and improve overall traffic flow.

Officials confirmed that the construction will take approximately 18 months to complete. The engineering department secured approval after submitting detailed traffic analysis, 3D structural models, and technical plans. The flyover will also play a crucial role in improving connectivity for commuters travelling towards New Chandigarh (Mullanpur) and Kurali, making daily travel more efficient.
Originally proposed in 2020, the project faced delays after a Metro corridor was planned along the same route. However, after a fresh traffic survey identified the area as a major congestion point, the proposal was revived with a modern double-decker design. This innovative structure will allow vehicles to use one level while reserving another level for future Metro tracks.
The project received in-principle approval from the Heritage Committee, which confirmed it would not disrupt Chandigarh’s heritage sector planning. Estimated to cost around ₹95 crore, the flyover now awaits final financial approval. Once completed, it will become one of Chandigarh’s key infrastructure upgrades, similar in importance to the Tribune Chowk flyover, and will transform traffic movement across the region.
